7/2/06 - All Star Game, Home Run Derby celebrationsCongratulations to Andrew for winning the Home Run Derby! Nobody hit a home run (the pitching machine was striking out people left and right, must have been quite deceptive), but Andrew hit a shot that hit the middle of the left field fence, the longest shot of the day (by far, it seems), to advance to the second round. Nobody did anything in the second round, so when Andrew came up to bat as the last batter, all he had to do was hit a ball into the outfield, which he did on the first pitch, to win the derby. It wasn't much, but it was longest hit of the second round and that's what counts. As far as I could tell he was the favorite to win it, and he is gaining a well deserved reputation in the league as that guy who hits bombs. Between Andrew's Home Run Derby performance and yesterday's win against the first place Skyline, the Beers seem to be getting a little more respect (this is the impression I get from what I noticed of the rest of the all stars at the game). So congrats on winning that $250 and the nifty trophy.
Anyway, Andrew also did a fine job representing the Beers in the All Star game, along with Mike D. Andrew hit cleanup (well deserved reputation in action)and had a nice single. Mike D came in later in the game, played solid second base (making a nice catch in centerfield--talk about range) and also had a nice hit. The Brooklyn/Queens team, which includes the Beers, won the game 11-3, or something. The score's not important. So during the championship game, the Brooklyn/Queens champion will be the home team. "This time it counts." Right. Too bad we're in the division with all the good teams (we're the only team under .500 in our division, compared with 3 teams in the other division, where there'd be 2 teams below us). We're not out of it yet, though, so let's continue turning it around.
Adam and Mike N also showed up and we all had a good time. The league's site will probably have pictures up in the next few days, and we'll repost them here as well.
